Two Principles for Your Dream Journey

If stepping out of our comfort zone to pursue a dream is the scariest step, then not getting overwhelmed by the journey to your end result is probably the hardest. It seems so much easier to just head right back to safety.

Even though you should let go of the “how” before you decide to go after your dream, eventually you will have to figure out what to do. But don't get discouraged. Always keep these two principles in mind:

  1. Focus on the immediate next step

  2. There’s no one right way

Don’t focus on the entire journey, just the immediate next step.

stepping stones

First, before you do anything, take some time to sit in the excitement of pursuing your dream. Celebrate your courage for saying yes and stepping out of your comfort zone. Give yourself grace and permission to get scared or discouraged, to create and adjust, and to take as much time as needed throughout the process.

Now, focus on your immediate next step. Don’t try to boil the ocean right away. When we take on too much or go too fast, we begin to operate from fear and emotion and allow our assumptions and expectations to take control. Slow down and just focus on the next step in front of you.

There’s no “one right way.”

The steps in the process look different for everyone and there are multiple options to choose from. It can depend on variables like who you are, what your natural talents and behaviors are, what you’re trying to do, what’s available to you, or what your experience is. One person’s immediate next step will be to plan out the entire process, while someone else’s will be to talk to others for inspiration.

There might be more common, easier, or faster ways to get to your goal, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right way or the only way. It’s the way that works best for you, and that’s what matters.

At the end of the day, remember that this is your journey to your dream. Take your time and follow your heart.
